Dear LCG-Team,

after some days of intense ProfiMail-Usage I can agree to some comments in this forum. ProfiMail eats a lot of accu power when running in backgrund. In comparison a lot more than the K9 and the "on board"-email client. I think the main-reason is the architecture of PM. Other E-Mail clients for anroid separate GUI and one or more processes for communication. If you close the gui, only the "IMAP-Process" is running in backgrund. If you reopen the gui then it connects to the running backgrund process. Are there any plans to change the PM-architecture? Or any other plans to reduce power consumption?

Thx,
Tom

Thanks, we'll measure and test this.
What do you use, Push mail or scheduled updates?

Pushmail for one "automated" account (IDLE Time 25 min). The rest ist manual update (one or two times a day).

Thx,
Tom

Hi, you can use Power Widget to monitor power consumption while profimail is running. With K-9 client I'm getting 6mA and when using profimail I get 64mA which is A LOT more :(

I still prefer profimail but power consumption is too heavy on my device.

Let me know if you need more details about this, or maybe some log files.

BTW, I use 2 PUSH mail accounts. No scheduled updates.

Hello together,

in the meantime I made some checks with powertutor. Profimail wastes much more energy than other e-mail clients. I tried different products (same time, same place, same network, same background processes) und have been surprised of the advantage of K9 and the native android client. Like mentioned before I think the programm architecture is fine for symbian and WM but not for android. I hope that LCG can retouch this point, because my battery is unable to hold out a full day. With the other clients it lasts more than one day - sometimes two days with similar usage.

Thx in advanve,
Tom

I'm checking with POP for every 30 Minutes, my Device drains 4% / Hour. When Profimail is deactivated it drains 1%/Hour.

Hopefully this can be fixed.

Thanks

Thanks for suggestions. Powertutor is suitable tool for us to work with.
We'll check and try to fix this issue.

Very good. Any update about this issue?
I've been using K9 with my Android devices for more than one year but ProfiMail is ahead.Just trying the 30 days trial. The battery consumption trouble, anyway, is quite important. More, it'd be nice to have a option to start it at boot time (not difficult to implement, I'm an Android developer :))
Being Profi not really cheap, I'd like to see the battery problem solved (and maybe also the autolaunch feature, but not really important) before buying :)
Thank you.

We made some progress here, please test on beta version 3.37.
Battery consumption should be lower mainly with IMAP-IDLE connected mailboxes.

Trying it from the morning, seems to use less battery but have not used in a "normal" way (holiday here, today).
Will see more in detail tomorrow and report here.

My battery still drains too fast. It won't make the day.

UPDATE: Profimail consume a lot of battery even if it's not checking mail. I think it'd be interesting if you try currentwidget. With that little app you can compare power consumption when profimail is open and when it's not.

Some people says that currentwidget is not accurate but it works for me. If I don't use profimail my phone will drain 1-2%/hour, If I use profimail It'll consume almost 10%/hour and currentwidget will show 5-7mA and ~60mA respectively.

There's something wrong with profimail for android and I think it has something to do with the interface, not the mail engine.

Regards.

Hello LCG team,

in my case the battery drain is still very high. I could imagine that it has something to do with the android sleep mode. May be that profimail avoids sleep mode, so the phone is alway running at "full performance". Thats why other android software products create background processes and use their main application just for communicating with the processes. When leaving the app, the main application is shut down completely - the background process (which is doing IMAP idle and other communication tasks) ist still open.

Bye,
Tom

For me, Profimail still needs way to much battery power :(

Hello LCG-Team,

the same question from my side. Any ideas, efforts or solutions for this problem?

For the moment I'm back on K9,
Tom

Any updates on this?
I purchased an Android phone last night and this issue is very apparent!! Battery has drained more than 15% in 2 hours.
